Update - Mail Slot in Ground Floor Metal Door
Hi — this is for Perfectionist and anyone else who has this problem.
We have the job done now. The question was where to get a through the door mailbox with a lock for a thin metal basement or first floor gate. We were tired of picking mail off the floor and did not want to put a hole in our new “upstairs” door which is at the top of a stoop and has a gasket for heat loss.
We wound up with a wall mounted mail drop box from Mailboxes unlimited online. It was expensive and took over a month to arrive. I can’t particularly recommend them, but we got the box.
The box has a mail slot attached to a chute which deposits mail into a box you can access with a key behind the door. My husband had to cut down the chute and then he cut a hole for the mail slot in the door and attached it all together. He used bolts but once we see how it works out, at some point he will weld it. You don’t have to weld it but we’d rather.
It was some trouble to do all this but it worked. Time to paint the door!
