Replacing windows in historic district
Hello all. This is a three part question. We recently realized we are in a new historic district in bed stuy. 1 – We need to replace 14 windows, front and back. Back of house Is visible from street. Current windows are vinyl, Not original. We want vinyl but it is my understanding the historic preservation only allows wood, aluminum or aluminum cladding. The application process seems daunting. Can anyone suggest reasonably priced contractors who are familiar with working within the restrictions of a historic district? 2 – They require a pic of the original house, any idea where we can find this? 3 – We also plan on restoring the brownstone frontage. The contractors we’ve seen so far have differing opinions. Any advice on which to do first…windows or brownstone? Thank you!!!!!

Definitely doing brownstone first and holding off on windows. The brownstoners said they would take care of filing. Thanks for the advice!

Do the masonry first and the respective contractors can each file with Landmarks for the permits. If you use contractors that deal with Landmarks all the time, even though they may not be the cheapest up front, they will certainly save you in the end.
