Replacing Rear Windows on Landmarked Building

Are rear windows on a house in a LPC district also subject to the same replacement restrictions as front windows? In other words, would I be required to replace wood for wood where it cannot be seen from the street? What happens if some of the new rear windows have much larger openings than the old windows, but some (also in the rear) will remain the same size? I didn’t see any differentiation in the guidelines on front vs back, but wonder what actually happens at the LPC in practice. Thanks…..

We’ve done a number of these, and have had no problem making significant changes in the configurations, including making much bigger openings, or combining several into one huge opening.  The sticking point is usually the top row of windows.  For some reason, Landmarks is very strict about the top floor windows.  Otherwise, as long as it’s not visible from the street, they are very flexible.

In general, no. As long as what is being done cannot be seen from the street. If you are on the corner or near then there may be problems.

I have had aluminum windows approved with LPC in the rear, but needed to keep the configuration.  Changing sizes may be more tricky, it will depend on the characteristics of particular building.  I have also done this in the past. Ula Bochinska, www.bostudio.us
