parlor window gates, necessary?

Hi, my family and I are moving to Van Buren (&Throop) in Bed Stuy and I was wondering if anyone out there is familiar with that part of Bed Stuy. The parlor floor windows don’t have gates and I’m wondering if they’re necessary?? I’ve heard that break-ins don’t usually happen through the front windows…are they worth getting? Any insight/advice is greatly appreciated!

It doesn’t matter what neighborhood you live in. If you don’t have an alarm system, parlor gates are necessary.

I put parlor guards on mine too. Mostly so that I could leave the windows open for ventilation in nice weather without worrying that someone might climb in.

I lived on Van Buren three blocks further out until last year, and found that the gates were still necessary. Also a good lock on roof and basement hatch. Great neighborhood in many ways, nice to have the park close by, amenities are improving, but you should definitely secure your property.
