Looking for brownstone entry doors

Hi all, as part of our renovation we’re replacing a stoop that was removed years ago (so no existing doors to restore) and putting in a set of entry double doors and a single second vestibule door. If anyone has any for sale, please let me know. We’re looking at all the usual suspects (Irreplaceable/Demo Depot, Olde Good Things, Eddie’s on Atlantic, ) but if anyone knows of an amazing resource for salvaged townhouse doors I would love that info. We’d consider having them made but figure old ones that we get fixed up would be less expensive.
please email me a m@cityrat.com if you have any doors for sale.

The dimensions of what we need for the double doors: about 8′-1 1/2″ high with a 1′-10 5/8″ transom. Total height is 10′-2 5/8″. The door width is ~ 4′-5 3/4″. The (inner) second single door should be around 3′-2 1/4″ wide, not less than 3′-0.” The sizes can vary a little because we can work with the space a little.

Thank you!!

Don’t be deterred by a beautiful door that needs to be restored, there are plenty of competent folks who can do that. It’s not cheap, and neither is the hardware–hinges, knobs, plates, and locks. Happy hunting!

There are some needing restored but have some nice details at Brooklyn Junk on Driggs by the Bedford L stop. I can’t remember the price but their stuff is all cheap. More of a flea-market yard-sale type store than an antique store. Got one of my solid oak highly detailed with mirror fireplace mantles there a few years ago for like $200.

You seem to be looking at most of the right places here in the city. But a lot of those spots are way overpriced (I hate Olde Good Things). If you’re willing to take the occasional jaunt outside the city you may be able to find better options.

There are lots of architectural salvage places all over the north east. Historic Albany Architectural Parts Warehouse is interesting, but small. There are a couple spots in Kingston, though not sure they’ll have doors. Buffalo is always a great spot to check since they used to have such grand housing.

But by far the greatest salvage place I’ve ever been to is Old House Parts Co. in Kennebunk Maine. They have so much, from beautiful doorknobs to a room full of mantles to entire entryways to a church steeple that sits out front on the grass.

Or if you’re really up for some work, try to find spots that are being torn down. A friend of mine got several amazing joists from a house being torn down just by chatting with t he demo crew.

By the way, when you say Eddie’s, are you talking about Eddie Hibbert? Does he have a spot on Atlantic now?

Also be sure that you factor in the lock hardware you are going to put on the door. I made that mistake when I did this a while back. Budgeted for the doors but I did not realize that the door was going to fit my locks and needed to get new locks (which were very expensive).

Best of luck!

It seems like it would be quite a hunt to find the right size & style in good condition. If you are landmarked do you need to get the exact style that was original to your house or is any door that’s historically appropriate an option?

There are 3 sets listed on CraigsList Brooklyn right now from $500 – $3,000. I know cos I’m also looking. They seem very expensive and in poor condition. Happy hunting.
