Locksmith in Clinton Hill or Fort Greene
Does anyone have recommendations for a locksmith in Clinton Hill or Fort Greene? I need a cylinder changed and want to get some information on replacing keyed locks with card key or fob activated locks. Thanks as always.

urbandad is correct in what he is saying. the current cast of thieves is more adept at using their muscles to break doors. they do not have the intellectual capacity to learn how to pick a lock.

FWIW I’ve lived in NYC a very long time, and I’ve seen plenty of houses broken into. But never every have I seen lock picking as the entry method. I’ve come to doubt the fancy locks do much vs a regular decent lock, although there are factors in lock selection that impact security.

OP here. One thing I discovered is the difference between Multi-Locks and the ubiquitous (what a locksmith called) Yale-type locks. The “tail” coming out of Multi-Lock cylinder will not match a Yale-type latch. One is horizontal (Yale type tail) the other vertical (Multi-Lock). A Yale cylinder tail fits into a Yale latch since they are oriented the same way. Not so with a Multi-lock tail into a Yale latch (and you can’t just adjust the Yale latch orientation). To use the Multi-Lock cylinder you need a tail adapter (sold separately, of course) that replaces the new tail and changes its orientation. Kind of a pain and now I know!

Also, there is no replacing keyed locks with cards or fobs. Keep the keyed locks in case the access system fails. Keep the fob on your key ring – it will get you in and out faster, but the key is there just in case.

as for the electronic part of your post, I think billys in greenpoint does access controls and there is a man down south of the park, when you go past the park on PPW. i cannot recall his name.

you can change the cylinder yourself (so long as you were able to fit those little square and round pegs that we used to play with as children into the correct holes) . look at the latch side of the door. you may or may not have a trim plate covering the screw i am about to reference (baldwin has such a plate, marks does not). if you have the plate, you must remove it. then, above the deadbolt will (usually) be two little screws right in line with the side of mortise cylinder. loosen the little screw closest to the outside of the door. do not take it out. once it is loose, put the key into the cylinder about half way and see if the cylinder will turn, counter clockwise. if it has been in forever, it may be hard. if you do not mind possibly damaging the cylinder, put a screwdriver in the key hole and give it a turn.
most brownstone doors take a cylinder about 1.25″ long. thick ones go to 1.5″. some can take a cylinder 1.125″. if you can leave that door unlocked, take it to the hardware store on Myrtle by say Waverly, a little east maybe. they c an sell you a cylinder there. keep in mind, you can get cheap cylinders or pricey ones (medeco and multi lock; if you want a good one and want me to do this, i can order one; we can set this up by email).
when you reinstall, do not force it. handle it with ease. you can strip the threads. if it does not go, back off.
if you do not want to do what i just said, i will be down in that area of brooklyn today and if you asked me to change a cylinder and if i have what you want in my car and I do not have to go shopping, i will not charge you my posted hourly minimum.
i am less able to talk to you about fobs though many of my customer’s have them and the unit for that simply ties into the door control system. low voltage locksmiths know about these.
