Large window on staircase landing

I have a very ornate staircase with a 3×4 opening on the landing that looks into the dining room. Although this has been trimmed with matching trim to the doorframes, I don’t believe it is original to the house (1890s renaissance revival style). My question is – what to do? It isn’t safe to leave open – I was first thinking of stained glass or some kind of wooden screen, but maybe I should just fill it in and fix the wainscoting? If you look at the surround, you may find some clues to what type of window was there originally. You may find hinge marks or other signs the window was fixed, hinged (and on which side) or pivoting. These late Victorians had internal windows for light and air. For instance, our pantry has a casement window, bathrooms have casement windows onto and air shaft, and some internal doors (bathroom, main bedroom and rear hall) have upper panels of plain opaque or patterned Florentine glass.

How interesting! I’ve never seen anything like it in Brooklyn, but I’m sure it is original, going by the unusual trim — later generations would not be able to make that up. I would guess this originally held a stained or leaded glass window. It may have been fixed or a casement window with a hinge on the side or the bottom. I’d leave the beautiful trim in place, and fill it in with glass. Perhaps something patterned will indicate to people it’s not air. Sometimes the glass repair shops in Brooklyn have old Florentine glass. Someday you might also find a salvage stained or leaded glass window that fits in the space. If you have other fancy windows in the dining room, it may have matched.

Also, if you prefer stained glass to some wood in the window, and want to have it safe in case anyone fell into it, as mentioned above, you can put some sort of unbreakable glass or plastic over it on one side – I know when someone I knew had the original stained glass window that was over the top of bay windows restored, it was reinstalled with something like that, both to provide better insulation but also to protect it from damage. It could work to protect people from damage as well, if that’s something you are concerned about.

I agree with the different trim it may not be original. I would first try to figure out why someone added it – was there a need for light to pass through, or air, or did the stairway perhaps have a closed in sense without it? Then see if you need what it allowed – perhaps with electric lights now, you don’t need the light, though you might appreciate any natural light that came through. Analyze the airflow. Put a big piece of cardboard in front of it and see how the stairway feels.

I also think it would be easier to leave it – but analyzing the flow of light and air (and perhaps the view it affords to the next room, and maybe to the outside?) might help you decide between a glass option option or some sort of fretwork. While the wrought iron looks nice, I’m not sure it fits with the house. Other options to consider are a stained glass window (antique or new custom), and a wooden fretwork design (architectural salvage or newly made to fit.)

See what Augustiner says. If you do glass you want lami. No plain glass. If someone’s child ever tumbled down there and went through it, it would be bad. I think you can have bear glass blast a design or pattern on lami and you can probably pick any pattern off the ‘net. They’ve duplicated patterns for me.

I was thinking wrought iron was a possibility (keeps both light and airflow)- I googled “artistic metal railing panel insert” and you could perhaps come top with some ideas. Many of these are made for railings but seem like they could be adapted to that window shape.

Leave it, it’s much less work to just put a sheet of laminated or tempered glass. Especially because matching the color of the existing wood with new one is going to be very hard.
You can choose frosted or if you want a choice you choose clear glass and buy a frosted decal from Etsy, or even some faux stained glass sticker which is … a matter of taste of course.
