i recently learned that at least one of the doormakers mentioned above is finishing exterior doors with interior spray lacquer. Lacquer is a hard finish and i doubt interior products have uv protection. exterior wood needs soft finish so as to enable it to give (without cracking) as the wood expands and contracts and it needs uv protection. for anyone calling anyone to make or refinish or rebuild doors, you tell them what to top coat with (yes, you tell them): Genuine marine varnish (not from lowes or HD) from the boat yard or West Marine. to name a few there is Epifanes, Pettit Captains or Flagship, Interlux. there is also waterlux.

something else, it takes a little bit of work to get the marine varnishes to level and finish smooth. this is done by sanding between coats, 180 or 220 grit. this process takes longer than spraying fast drying modern product but with the proper attention under the hand of a traditional craftsperson, the finish will come out just as nice as the sprayed lacquer. it takes someone used to doing things by laboring by h and, the old fashioned way.

do not use Mcklosky. we stopped using it about a decade ago for no particular reason other than that it was not sold at the boat yards. about a month ago i got a call to repair a door broken during a break-in in Crown Heights. i visited the job and also noted that the finish was whiting over. the customer told me she had had the door refinished 3 years ago by someone (she had also told me she had wanted me to refinish it at that time and had called me but i said i turned the job away; i rebuild and refinish doors with structural damage, rotten wood and the like, falling apart) and the person who did the job put mcklosky on it. Mcklosky is a mass market consumer product. i was able to salvage the existing finish by surface sanding it and recoating with Pettit Captains but the customer will have to put another coat on next year and perhaps two coats every three years after that.

lastly, marine varnishes build. because they are soft, we can add coats and coats and not worry about them chipping like how i know interior poly would on a floor and like i suspect lacquer might if too many coats were applied. i had been working on 96 st in manhattan some years back and there was a beautiful door with fine weathered finish on it; it had enough wear to add character while still protecting the door. the man in the house was elderly and i asked him what he had done to the door and this is what he said “i put 18 coats of varnish on there 18 years ago and have not touched it since”. the point is, it does not hurt to build this stuff from the get go with 5 or 6 coats and give it a light sanding and recoating every few years. we cannot do that with hard finishes.

Experienced carpenters who work on townhouses in Brooklyn will be able to create new reproduction interior doors that exactly match what would have been there (you need to show them an example). Re-creating exterior reproduction doors from scratch is an even more specialized (and costly) skill, and there are only a handful of experts in Brooklyn who do it. If you need reproduction exterior doors, you have to use someone who does this all day long, so the doors will look correct, keep out all the drafts, and last through all cycles of weather for years. It is also possible to buy off the shelf exterior double doors that look nice (but are not an exact reproduction) and these are quite a bit less expensive than having them custom made. If your door has an arched top, you will probably only get that custom.

We have just used Jhony Garcia who owns Woodwork JM (his work is on Instagram), and he did such a good job recreating our exterior doors we have had him refurbish all of our interior doors that had been chewed by a dog over the years.
