Front door curtain

My 2-family row house has a typical front door with glass that leads to a vestibule. The vestibule has another door, also with glass, which leads to the hallway. At the end of the hallway is the door to my apartment, which also has glass. I can look through the door to the apartment all the way through the vestibule door, to the front door, and see who’s at the door. Which doors should have sheer curtains and which should be unadorned? Is there a rule? People on my block have both options. It seems as though originally the front door was left unlocked, and callers would enter the vestibule and ring the bell (the original mailbox, speaking tube and bell is still there). Now we have locks on both doors. But is there a need to have privacy for the vestibule, or just the hallway?

It’s entirely up to you. We have a sheer curtain behind the inner door, nothing behind the outer double doors. It’s sufficient privacy for us and allows light to enter the hallway. Some neighbors have closed venetian blinds on both doors. Some have nothing.

My house is the same as when I bought it – lace on the inside door only. What is the logic behind this? You can clearly see someone’s face when opening the vestibule door, before you let them in, but still have privacy for the hall? It seems a bit strange to have nothing on the front door, so my vestibule is in sight, clear as day. On the other hand, nothing is in there of any consequence, so maybe this is just fine.

I have lace on the inside door and locks on both. There are no rules*; its sort of like whether toilet paper rolls should be over or under 🙂 *Maybe there ARE rules for multi-family houses–living in Lefferts Manoe I can be blissfully unaware if these exist

I don’t know if it indicates a ‘convention’ but my outside doors are plain glass while the glass of the interior door has an elaborate etching that pretty much obscures vision.

I don’t think there are any rules. I had double tombstone round top panes in the exterior door and a large half-high pane in the vestibule door and never put anything over them. My double parlour doors remained open all the time (the rental unit was below in the garden level so no upstairs tenants)
