Fixing Wood Framed (Original) Windows on a Budget

We’re just finishing up the interior renovations on our brownstone and due to budget restrictions we were only able to replace the windows in the rear facade of the building. The windows in our front facade are the original double-hung variety and are more than a little worse for wear. We have 7 int total to repair, with a combination of cracked/broken panes, windows that won’t open, windows that will open but immediately drop etc. We really aren’t in a position to replace them or have them properly restored right now, but I’m hoping to get them safe and functional again. Looking at previous forum posts, it looks like Vila Window Repair would be a good company to contact. Does anyone else know of a company that is happy to take on super old wood windows? If anyone has had similar work done can you give me a ball park figure on what your work cost? All help/advice appreciated!

We specialize in restoring landmark windows. It is a labor intensive process and unlike some believe, requires a fair amount of skill to do properly. I would advise to try to live with the current situation until your budget allows you to repair them properly. I have had to rerepair (when possible) many prior attempts at restoration.

I believe Daniel over at Manhattan-nest.com has a tutorial on window fixing as well. I wish we still had our old windows. The previous owner replied them with cheap, ill fitting vinyl windows sometime in the 90s… sigh.

Just FYI, any carpenter can handle this job. Also there are numerous books and info online available on the topic, if you want to understand what needs to be done. Google DoorSixteen window repair, Working Windows, etc. It’s preferable to do what you are doing and keep them rather than replace — more energy efficient, better looking, less expensive, and less wasteful. I got an estimate from Vila once and they wanted a couple hundred dollars per window to fix them. At that price I figured I was better off saving for new ones. Your experience may vary.
