Brownstone Entrance Door Refurbishment

The doors on my (1879) Brownstone could use some TLC. They need stripping or dipping/refinishing and weather sealing. Same goes for my vestibule doors too. On the inside (vestibule) doors the hinges tend to pull away/work their way lose on an almost constant basis. Could use reinforcement and be re-hung IMHO. Any recommendations out there on contractors? Inquiries to neighbors only get me sad stories of contractors I’d rather stay away from. Cost range is also always a help.

I called Steve from the Tinker’s Wagon. He lined out my options when it was time to address my front doors and was flexible and respectful when we hit surprises (Surprise! They are the original doors! And they are old mahogany and irreplaceable, so maybe we want to change up our plans? Yes!). He did great work with what he found and they are gorgeous, still, after five years. On his webpage they are pictured on the page devoted to door restoration and the 7th one (listed as “Fort Greene doors, although they are in Clinton Hill). Call Omar at Artist Wood Crafts. Long story short, we got “stonered” by someone we believe may actually shill on Brownstoner and opted for him to do our work rather than Omar. We were very disappointed and have always regretted the choice. A few years later, a friend was looking for his co-op front door to be refurbished and I offered Omar as a tentative suggestion…I explained we hadn’t used him ourselves but really wish we had. Long story short, the work he did was INCREDIBLE. He’s a true artist.
