Best Bang For The Buck - Windows

In reading past post on this topic I have read opinions but anything I have read seems to be quite old and a lot could have changed over the last couple of years. If we need to replace all of our non landmarked brownstone windows, what is the best bang for the buck out there? I drove past a gorgeous house today that was under construction and saw the Crystal label on them. Marvins seem to be the most loved but certainly the most expensive. A lot of mixed reviews on Kolbe windows on Brownstoner- Not much talk of Anderson windows. I saw Cate purchased Champion windows and loves them…. If we are living in this home (not an investment property), what exactly should I be looking for in a window? Also- What is the overall price difference from lets say a champion to a Marvin?

Very late reply, sorry. We really like our triple pane Armaclad (I prefer fiberglass with wood inside to vinyl), which were much cheaper than Marvins or Loewen. They’re a PA company, got them through Window Fix. They’re exceedingly quiet, and lower u values than Marvins or Anderson. There’s a LI company offering triple panes out of Poland that look promising and of nice quality too, which will compare when we get our tax return and do a few more windows later this spring and report back.

Thanks for the info. Have you had any experience installing storm windows. My old windows are not in great shape, but I am very attached to them and would like to put in storms and do some refurb to the old windows. I am not looking for perfect, just functional.

Cate, we had original windows with storms (installed by a previous owner) and it was not working for us. We had all the windows replaced with Marvins (landmarked and wanted the wood inside, warranty). The difference is substantial. The house is so much easier to keep a certain temperature (we were especially having trouble in the winters). Don’t kick yourself too much for not going with the storms. I also like not having to raise and lower storm windows. Granted, our originals were in very rough condition, but the storms were hardly doing anything to improve energy efficiency.

I am building a new house, and it’s very difficult to get windows that have the extreme insulation properties requested nowadays. Crystal was able to do match that, and they painted the outside brown and kept the inside white for me. I am not a builder, but they were nice to me and my one million questions on the phone. I also spoke to professional windows sellers, and they had to agree that for this price, nobody can match the quality. Windows came with mosquito nets, which i didnt even request. Eventually, i also always try to deal with things locally.

I am with Heights Historic Window and Door in Brooklyn, we specialize in Landmark installations and i can refer you to homes in the area that we have done. I have been in the industry for quite some time and have worked for big outfitters and supply companies. Dealing with Lowes and chains of that nature, you will not get the proper product nor installation. They do not know how to do Landmark properties and they sell very low quality products. They may come in the cheapest but you get what you pay for in the long run.

We put in Anderson windows last year and are happy with them so far (through this cold winter). We have the “A” series in the front and 200 series in the back. Part of our bid was a slider, casement, and a large transom window so our decision to go with Anderson was, in part, because those priced the best too (other companies came in under for the windows, but much higher on the door and transom). All incidental, but my parents have half Anderson (A-Series) and half Marvins and like the Anderson better.

We don’t love the Champions but 15 of them cost $12,000 installed (that included rebuilding four frames) vs. $30,000 for the Marvins. If I had my way, I’d have original windows with storms. They are the most energy efficient, beautiful, and green. Crystal costs slightly less than Champion but the frame looked bulkier to me. This is our second winter with the Champions and I’m wondering if there was something wrong with the install. We put up plastic for better insulation during this extremely cold weather and it’s billowing out, so we definitely have drafts coming through the windows. Anyone know?

Crystal will be the best bang for the buck. You can call them and get estimate. Yes you will find better windows, but the construction of Crystal windows is pretty good. They are quick and based in Flushing, which also means your money stay in the city. I believe they can have someone come to measure the rough opening once you decide to go with them, and your windows should be ready in ten days (especially at this period of the year). I just bought ten of these windows, and would do it again.

I am in the same situation as I’m looking to replace as well, I ran into Okna windows and I got a demonstration of them and they seemed pretty good for the price. They are replacement windows, so you would use your existing frames

I’m interested in this topic too. My neighbor is having all 14 windows replaced with Marvins (wood on the inside and primed and painted white) for $18,000\. Ouch.
