How do you tip the garbage man and mailman?

I guess I’ll just leave a note in my mailbox for the mailman but leaving a check or money in garbage cans doesn’t seem like a great idea? Any ideas? Does everyone actually tip garbage and mailman still?   thanks

We gladly tip our regular sanitation guys:  a bag of cookies with $100 cash inside the bag.  This requires rushing out in the morning when you hear them coming to hand it off directly.  We don’t do it because they do us special favors–we do it becuase they work really hard at an incredibly important job.  Our postal carriers and local post office, on the other hand, completely suck, so we don’t tip them.

Ah – regulations…   I sense a non native here lol.   On a more realistic note – a discrete envelope, or holiday card is best, and a face to face thank you (if possible).  These will go a LONG way the rest of the year.  Its more anonymous if you’re in a building rather than a house, so i can understand the why bother mentality…  but in many cases – these guys are on the regular route, and can watch out for your home/cars in ways you never could, simply because you’re not always around. Also on those rare (maybe not so rare for me, with all the projects i get into lol) occasions where you have large volume to throw away – its just a basic sign of appreciation for a year’s worth of picking up your trash.  a 20 spot, and sometimes a bottle of wine lets me wake up without having to0 sweep my sidewalk of all the stuff that spilled, nor do i chase my pails down the block and sometimes find the lids, etc…  yes – i shouldn’t have to tip to get good service, and realistically, if i didn’t – my trash would stillg et picked up and my mail would still be delivered – true.  But how WELL is it done?  Might be different for you guys, but for the most part these are guys from the neighborhood..  they know my jeep – and per my challenge, will do their best to bury it, as they are often the same crew shoveling on snow days.  By the same token, they also *never* bury my wife’s small car. For mail delivery – i genuinely like the guy.. he’s gone out of his way before, ringing the bell if it’s raining, so we don’t get soggy mail (it’s an outside box, not a slot) and putting things in plastic if we’re not home on said rainy days.  He did this before tipping, and has alerted me to other issues whenever i’ve run into him (saw birds nesting along my cornice line and mentioned it…  we were able to relocate before they caused damage, and other little things like that.)   I know him by name, and he’s always pleasant.  An end of year tip in that case is one i would give automatically.   I also tip my UPS guy at work, because i give him a workout, ordering multiple hundred pound items, very often.

DSNY and US Post Office workers are not supposed to accept tips.  This is an excerpt from a Summary of DSNY Rules and Regulations: Collection of residential refuse, recyclables and residential bulk is provided **_**_FREE_ **_to New York City residents by the DSNY. Employees of the DSNY are** absolutely prohibited from asking for or receiving money or any other benefit in connection with their official duties.  As per the USPS Postal Service employees may not accept cash in any amount or form (bills, checks, money orders) from an outside source.
