Acceptable garbage/recycling containers

We recently moved into a garden apartment in Cobble Hill. The previous tenant left us his garbage/recycling cans, but told us NYC won’t pick them up from the street. They are pretty standard plastic cans, but with wheels and hinged lids. Anyone know what the problem is and/or where I can find information about what containers NY’s Strongest will accept?

The problem is with the hinged lids. They get in the way with dumping the load into the trucks. Years ago when we had trouble with our lids being stolen I tied them to the can with plastic wire in such a way that they became hinged. The sanitation worker chewed me out for 5 straight minutes on how I was screwing up his route and that if I didn’t cut the lids free he was going to toss the entire can to teach me a lesson.

I was under the impression that they take any standard can 32 gallons or less as long as they have the appropriate labels on them. You can get the labels for free from DOS by requesting them here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dsny/html/contact/requests_decal.shtml DIBS, The problem with using clear/blue bags for glass/plastic/metal recycling is that can collectors open them up to take the refundable items, leaving a mess. So if you use bags, you need to put the deposit and non-deposit items in separate bags.

I just always set everything out curbside in bags….trash in black and recycling in blue or clear.

Best bet is to buy the blue plastics recycling cans from Home Depot or Lowes. They’re only $15 and you can set them curbside for pick up.
