Gas Meter Upgrade

10 years the oil heater was replaced with gas by Keyspan. I am told that the meter capacity is insufficient..it’s (I think) 200kBtu and with a 150Kbtu boiler, 2 stoves, 2 dryers and w/h that adds up to about 330kBtu. My questions are 1) since it’s been working for 10 years, isn’t it best to ignore it? (I assume low gas presure would be the only issue?) and 2) if I call Nat Grid to fix it, will it cause trouble? Will it have to be permitted & inspected in a basement full of plumbing & electrical of unknown provenance?

Well the figure is from: Boiler input: 150, 2 stoves conventionally rated at 40 (it’s close to add up the burner’s ratings and add the oven as a fifth burner), 2 dryers at 20 and a hi-rec w/h at 60\. Am I wrong? The point I was making is that it’s been over 10 years living wth this ‘dangerous condition’…there’s a CO monitor near the w/h & boiler and has never gone off. I assume other appliances wih lower ratings aren’t as critical. An engineer friend I was asking about something unrelated. He says he found a rating on the gas meter of, I recall, 250. Don’t get involved, leave it as it is. if it is not broken, do not fix it.And , BTW, who told you meter is not sufficient? how do they know?

I’ll willing to bet you’re way off with that 330K btu number.  Read the meter ratings tag. What it tells you in the cfh (cubic feet per hour) column is about the BTUs in thousands it allows to pass through. eg. 200 CFH = 200,000 BTU. Check your boiler’s ratings plate for its “input” rating, then your water heater, stoves and dryers if possible. If your demand is greater than your meter’s ability to supply it, then you’re in a dangerous condition that can create problems with gas-burning appliances not lighting correctly, burning insufficiently, creating elevated levels of carbon monoxide, etc. Check it out and do the right thing.
