ConEd new service
Hi, We recently purchased a 3-family property in Brooklyn. ConEd has a work order to install new meters. ConEd discovered on the meter install date that there is no live 220V service to the building (110V is working fine). They will not install the meters until the new 220V service is installed. In order for ConEd to install the new service they will need to rip up the street to install new conduit. This will most likely include the sidewalk and our front courtyard area of the building. What I’ve been told (by an electrician) is that I am responsible for any demolition and re-construction on our property, ConEd will handle road and sidewalk. ConEd has not given me an answer…yet. Has anyone had any experience with ConEd and installing new service to your property that required the construction of new conduit? Is the electrician correct in that we will be responsible for ripping up the concrete in our front courtyard (essentially the area next to the stoop) and replacing this? Are we responsible for this cost? Thank you!

Yes, when I had it done, they broke the street and sidewalk but not the front yard.

A couple of years ago the service to my house failed and Con Ed discovered that it was running in the original wood conduit. They closed down the street, ripped it up, installed new conduit and new main. While they warned me that there was a possibility that they might have to break a flag inside my gate, they did not have to do it. I’m not sure they even dug a hole in the garden. They pull the new equipment through the same path as the old. There was never any discussion of me paying for anything but they did say they might not be able to match my concrete if they did have to break it. All my discussions were with Con Ed, not the electrician.

About 25 years ago I needed to upgrade to 220v electrical service to my home. ConEd gave me a story similar to BrooklynBeach’s. When a ConEd employee came to do the actual inspection of the line he said that there wasn’t any problems. By using the original connection the work could go done without any cost to me. Getting them to come back to do the work was another kind of headache.

Thank you both for your input. Sounds like we will be responsible, but at least the work does not sound too drastic.

WOW….did you have an inspection?? No 220v service is pretty rare these days. What transworld said above…it will be a pretty narrow ditch

I believe you will have to pay for your front yard work. But it doesnt mean you have to break everything up, it can be a narrow band.
