City Power & Gas (ESCO)

Got a cold call from them today suggesting they are “the” supplier of gas/electric for ConEd in NY and asking for my information, including account information.  I blew them off even though they were claiming I’d automatically be saving money over just straight coned. To be fair when I went to ConEd’s website, they are listed there, along with a ton of other suppliers, so clearly they are not “the” supplier.  But anyway, curious if anyone else has used them?

Con Ed has its own fixed rate plan that’s cheaper than any ESCO that’s cold-called me.   As another poster said, never give your Con Ed account number to an ESCO.  There are a lot of crooks in this racket and all they need to slam you is your name, address and Con Ed acct #.  Bottom line, they don’t even need that info to quote you a residential rate, just to screw you.

ESCO also called me several months ago with the same offer. I asked them to call back in a few days and immediately called ConEd and asked if in fact this was a legit offer. Apparently, in my case it was legit. ConEd did tell me they are indeed a supplier to ConEd. I decided not to switch over.

This week I have been getting one call a day from an international number selling different services. When I pointed out I was on the No Call List and was going to report their number the line went dead. These are all too good to be true and is either a scam or the bill will be skyhigh either right off the bat or down the road.

I refuse to talk to ESCOs due to the scammability factor.  Anyone can call from a boiler room (or worse yet show up on your doorstep with something bogus hanging around their neck) and ask for your account information and lie about who they are and then slam you.   I would never give out any info until i can read the terms and conditions in fine detail to avoid bait and switch pricing.  Not one of these shady characters has ever followed up to send me anything.  It seems like a complete minefield to me.     I have never spoken with any friends that signed up, so i can’t compare coned rates and esco rates over the course of a year or two.  Personally, i think if you’re going to do it, you call them.  The cold call and magazine-style sales smell awfully shady.
