Looking for Vibration Engineer

There is a very uneven road surface in front of our house. When heavy trucks and school buses drive down the street and hit the rough spot, it causes the house to vibrate. Even vibrations caused by cars can be felt on upper floors if the cars drive fast enough. We have unsuccessfully tried to get the city to repair the street during the last 1.5 years. We are planning to engage a vibration engineer to measure the vibrations in our home to confirm whether / that the vibrations fall above the levels deemed acceptable by the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). Has anyone had experience from doing a similar study? (Or a vibration study measuring vibrations from adjacent construction). Can you recommend and engineer? Thanks!

We have the same thing. There’s a sink hole in the front of the house that Con Ed has been filling and patching for years without much success. We reinforced the main beam and joists in the basement, which helped reduce the vibrations in the house a great deal, although they’re not completely gone. Many of the joists weren’t really touching the flooring above, so we shimmed that so now they do.

I don’t know the name of the vibration co., but he found them in a hurry, you could look in the Blue Book. Unless the standards are a matter of law, you have a real uphill battle. And how do you know fixing the road will solve the problem after all that effort? Rock transmits vibrations better than soil, that could be part of the problem. Is the house right on the street or set back? maybe you could dig a trench in front of the house and fill it with sand to absorb the vibrations. more elaborate would be to isolate the floor from the structure.

Thanks for replying. We did have a company measure vibrations on the outside of building and they were significantly higher than is acceptable according to a number of standards. The next step is to measure the vibrations of the floor inside the building, but we would like to try to find a different company for this. Any recommendations / suggestions would help!
