Plumbing follow-up : through the ceiling

Hi again, Thanks to those of you who responded to my post the other day asking about ceiling or floor access to repair bathroom plumbing. We broke through the ceiling yesterday. There is a pretty big hole in the bend in the pipe coming from the toilet. It was the original pipe, I think. We’re having the pipe replaced today. Any advice on repairing the wall and remediating the moisture? Is there a protocol for drying out the wood, replacing it, or treating it? I’d love recommendations on how to proceed after the plumbing is fixed and whom to contact. Many thanks, Christine

Assess the size of the mold and/or moisture problem and the type of damaged materials before planning the remediation work. Select a remediation manager for medium or large jobs (or small jobs requiring more than one person). The remediation plan should include steps to fix the water or moisture problem, or the problem may reoccur. The plan should cover the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and include steps to carefully contain and remove moldy building materials to avoid spreading the mold.

i wouldn’t use a fan. just pick up a guy from the home depot parking lot for $120 day (don’t pay more – these guys act like union workers but theres always someone willing to work) and get him to do this plus any other small stuff you need. if you tell him what you are doing, he will pick out the material too.

This happened to me a few months ago. I basically cut out all the wet drywall myself, making the hole much bigger, put a fan in there and let it dry for a couple days. Then pretty much any contractor should be able to patch the hole. I paid $200 to the plumber to replace the pipe and then $300 to the contractor to patch the ceiling and the top of the wall. (With the drying, etc, it took him most of a day.)
