New Water Main and Sewer needed

Hi All- I just moved into the area with young children and must change the existing lead service to a copper service (or so I was advised).  in addition to this, it seems that the sewer line is broken and the water keeps backing up, my inside plumber said I have a clay sewer and it is common that it breaks after so many years.  Long story short, I need to hire a company to do both my water main and sewer……has anyone had good experience with this or heard of a good company in the area??  I am scared to know but I assume this is costly…… I appreciate any and all feedback   Amanda

Hi All- I wanted to provide a update……..So I went with Harris for a number of reasons (professional, reputation, reasonable price etc.) and I could not have been happier.  Literally everything about the experience was great (except for the jack hammers), they communicated well and completed my job within 2 days of signing the contract.  I thank everyone who provided feedback!

Are you sure the line is broken? It could have an obstruction, it might be worth it to invest in a video inspection. Many drain cleaning companies have video inspection equipment in addition to their snakes. If it turns out to be a cloggged pipe they can just clear it for you on the spot.

PS I used Figliola the second time and found them to be the most expensive but were knowledgable, reliable, efficient and responsible and I would use them again. I spoke with Harris and the rep made a lot of statements (re start timeframe and length of guarantee) when he came to see the job but those statements were not reflected in their contract.  When I asked for those statements to be included they were not willing to put them in.  Beware.

I must 2nd Harris Water, it is a nice father son combo running the business and both are very attentive.  They have done both sewer and water on several of my developments and at a very fair rate, I guess this is why they have been around for 90+ yrs……..I have also heard some good things about Figliolia but that whole MTA scandal a few years ago certainly turned me off……………..

Beware Mainmain.  I recommended them in the past, but no longer. 
Background: Water mains should last 30-50 years and are considered ‘new’ until they are 20 years old.  Standard practice dictates that the main is one continous piece of pipe from the house shut off in the cellar to the city shut off in the street.

Mainman installed a new water main and less than 12 years later it broke. It had a 10 year guarantee. I asked Mainman to give me a discounted price for replacement for a main that should not have failed. I dodged a bullet when he gave me his regular price.

The broken main was removed.  He had put in two pieces of pipe connected with a coupling which is not accepted practice.  In addition, the coupling was over-tightened causing it to crack (likely long ago) and was slowing leaking, likely for years.  Then the coupling broke apart completely, resulting in water entering the main electrical conduit and pouring into my cellar though the electrical main.  That resulted in ConEd terminating my electircal service and required extensive electrical work to reconnect in addition to the cost of another new water main.

If the statute of limitations had not expired, I would be suing Mainman for negligence or breach of contract for failing to install the main in a workmanlike manner.

The most established firm is Alex Figliolia -718-643-0900\.  (if the name sounds familiar, they had some corruption dealings on a major City project a few years ago).  Been around over 75 years.  Replaced our lead water line 25 years ago and our sewer house connection (cast iron, but damaged by construction on the adjacent lot) 2 years ago.  Professional, neat and quick (replaced the sewer connection in one day came back the next day for the exterior restoration).

Ahhhh your post sounds all too familiar!  I too had the wonderful opportunity to replace my water main and sewer over the last 3 years.  After doing some extensive research and meeting with several companies my neighbor suggested I give Harris Water Main & Sewer a call as they are located on Atlantic Av. They had great reviews (for the most part) on the internet and the owners who I met with were very professional, they quoted me one of the cheaper rates i had received and completed my entire job within 1 week of signing the contract.  I naturally used them again for the 2nd job and was a great expereince as well……….
