Flushometer toilet

Hi all, I am redoing my bathroom in a pre-war coop apartment and I was going to just keep my old flushometer toilet, but my contractor is trying to talk me out of it, saying it will look old in a new bathroom. Anyhow, does anyone sell flushometer toilets that are made for residential use? I don’t want my bathroom to look like a public restroom, and the big commercial toilets are all I can seem to find online. Am I missing something? Thanks, Alex

New toilets save water. Old bowls can look great in retro-designed new bathrooms, but beat-up, old, chromed flushometers? My customers don’t think so. Old bowls do not work correctly with new water saving flushometers. Your old bowl is an antique and will clean up fine, but if you decide to replace your flushometer, along with your old chrome faucets, to go with your shiny new towel bars, you will not be pleased. Often, replacing a toilet includes replacing the lead bend. In old coops, toilet waste lines may last many decades, but they can suddenly start leaking, or they can be damaged during renovation. If your old lead bend needs to be replaced after your renovation, your coop will probably do it through your new floor, not your neighbor’s ceiling. I have installed a few elevated toilet seats lately, for aging family members, recovering from medical conditions. You may also consider the height of your old bowl.

despite my trolling comment, i do have strong aesthetic opinion on the traditional flushometer toilet (on the plus side, would pair well with institutional urinal). However, what i DO like – and i don’t know if they are the same thing – are “tankless toilets” where the two paddle buttons are recessed into the wall behind it. The cantilever ones are really nice to me – but obviously waste pipe implications there. Master Plvmber may have been suggesting tankless toilets and if you do a google image search for them you will see what i am trying to describe.

i have to agree with Fexley. just google flushometer toilet in the google images and look at the pics you get and click on the image to see what model, etc. I did it the other day when i saw this as I was surprised you could not find anything. Steve

Pre-war Manhattan coops are filled with flushometer toilets. I think they look great – much better than tank toilets.

Don’t let your contractor make design choices for you. Flushometer bowls, when you’ve got enough water for them, work great. Look at Kohler and Toto for flushometer water closets.

or, alternatively, is there some sort of equivalent to “reglazing” for toilets so I can keep my old one?
