Time Warner Cables through yard?
I’m having trouble finding exact answers to this question… We recently purchased a townhome in Brooklyn. There are a large amount of wires going through the backyard within our property lines that we believe belong to Time Warner. We estimate that that these wires provide service to 10-15 other homes. We don’t have Time Warner service at the moment – the house is unoccupied. In addition to being a huge eyesore, we have begun extensive renovation on the home, and this will eventually include the backyard. The wires are likely to be in the way and possibly become damaged. Do we have any recourse? We’ve called Time Warner and were told they would “Call us back” since the rep we spoke to had no answers. While my husband thinks cutting the wires to get them out of the way is okay, I don’t want to damage anyone else’s property or cause issues with the neighbors. If they “have to” keep the wires where they are, is there any precedent for getting something out of it? Free cable perhaps? 😉

I’ve had success getting TW & Verizon to take down deal lines, and to re-route a line into a brownstone underground (with the brownstone owner footing the bill for a sleeve, and TW/V pulling the line through). I don’t think there’s any chance they’d relocate lines to other buildings if they are crossing your property. Be prepared for them to reschedule the appointment, show up late, etc. jcarch ———————— James Cleary Architecture

If you’re really diligent you might be able to get the cables that are unused removed but almost every block in Brooklyn is the same as yours w/ access only through houses &, yes, utilities do have legal right of way. If you make a big stink you might cause a lot of havoc over the illegal fences – the materials & heights of those are mandated by fire codes.

Yeah, really, where did you move from? Not a good sign that you’re getting so worked up and talking legalities about a fact of life in most brownstone neighborhoods. You can’t expect Verizon and TWC to take your sensibilities into account when it’s the norm around here, AND there’s no alternative. Maybe you can take up a collection amonsgst your neighbors to underground the cables ;). That said, I did cut & remove about a half-dozen cables that were tacked along the back of my house which clearly went nowhere. But I was very careful about checking that.

To mc33433: I’ve exactly the same problem with our brownstone in bed-stuy and I really identify with your post, having had the same thoughts and frustrations. In our case, there’s actually a time warner/verizon pole at the back of yard, and then cables come from the pole over the back yard to the house, and on to neighbors. This is on my to-do list to sort out, particularly as we want to redo/landscape the back yard in the near future. I’d like to suggest that we get in touch, and this way we can share experiences/research etc. as each of us moves forward. This could be a time-saver… My email is fordvesant at gmail dot com. Please get in touch!

“the only access to our property is through our home. There is no other entrance to the backyard. We are rarely home to provide access if there was ever an issue with someone else’s service.” Verizon workers HAVE occasionally been known to climb fences.

Is it true that utility companies automatically have an easement through your property? Wouldn’t that have been something recorded that we would have seen mention of in our closing? I think the previous owners never objected, and the home was in their family 50+ years. The other thing I should mention is that the only access to our property is through our home. There is no other entrance to the backyard. We are rarely home to provide access if there was ever an issue with someone else’s service. We will definitely contact Verizon as well- thanks for that tip. Had no plans to get service anytime in the near future but the state of/amount of these wires is bothersome. And as I mentioned, I’d rather not disrupt the neighbors’ service.

The utilities (Verizon, TIme Warner, Con Ed, etc.) have a right of easement through the backyards in order to provide service to the community. They also have an obligation to maintain their property. You should reach out to each utlity and let them know of your plans so they can propertly protect. Cutting them will likely disrupt cable and phone service for many of your neighbors if they run parallel to the house or at a minimum those in the house adjacent to yours if they run perpinducularly. I dont think that will be a good calling card to your future neighbors. Good luck on trying to get free service.

This can get complicated. It’s importnat to know whether they are Time Warner cables or Verizon. You might have some luck if you call Verizon in first. They actually respond (well, sort of) and will tell you what’s what. The problem is that there are often no poles in the back, so these companies have to make do.They don’t remove cables or wires when they’ve finished so it ends up like a tangled web.Whichever company it is may have an easement whcih allows them to be there. We had this same difficulty and when I finally threateded to simply cut them, they did show up. We ended up tidying them, puttimg them in a neat bunch & attaching them to a fence, not removing anyting. Cutting them is really tempting but you may open yourselves up to a whole lot of aggravation.
