Rat? Mouse? in Cellar - Now What?

I can’t believe I’m in this situation but, I was getting something in our cellar where we store food, beverages, cleaning products, clothes etc. – and something scurried by me, either a mouse or rat, I’m not sure which.  We have owned the house (a brownstone rowhouse, attached on both sides) for almost 7 years and I’ve never seen anything like that anywhere in the house.  Our former top floor tenant had a mouse problem but that was because mice had chewed through the back of his stove from the attached houses – an exterminator closed up the hole and the mouse problem went away. We are in the middle of a renovation and have workers digging up dirt in our small backyard and setting down cement for a deck, and they opened our cellar’s storm door in back and it was open all day and has been open for a couple of nights (the workers left it open and we have never used it before so didn’t close it, our mistake) – the inside door to the cellar was closed at night but open during the day.  Could whatever I saw have gotten in that way?  I’ve never seen mice or rats in our backyard. I’m confounded both as to how this thing got into our cellar and what that means in terms of numbers of them, and how we get rid of them.  From now on the storm door needs to stay closed as much as possible obviously but this seems like a much bigger problem.  I’m probably going to buy rat snap traps since I think a rat trap would catch a mouse because it’s bigger.   Any thoughts?  Suggestions?

Yes johnmclaren I’m coming around to the same realization – spoke with  an exterminator today and decided to put out a variety of traps, clean out the basement, de-contaminate with bleach/water mix and then ask an exterminator to plug up holes, might even ask the contractor to do a little work in the basement so it’s in better shape – not a full refinishing but SOMETHING so it’s not as naturally dirty as it’s been (at least we had asbestos removed 7 years ago before moving in). daveinbedstuy I don’t have it in me to stomp on mice in glue traps and have heard about gory scenes and lots of noise – it seems really cruel even to mice that we want dead (actually I don’t want the mice dead, I just want them out of our house but unfortunately getting them out of our house means killing them – I mean, where else will they go if I trap and release them?).

There is not much you can do, either clean the entire area and remove everything from the place or light dozens of incense sticks and keep in the rooms for a few days. All living creatures would eventually go out after which you will have to shut down their entrance path. Hope it helps.

Yeah, the spring traps dont often catch them.  Get the glue traps and then just stomp on them and toss it out.

We definitely have an infestation and it seems like it didn’t start last week. I found a dead mouse in a box of stored food and droppings in cardboard boxes and bags of cat food with chewed holes in the bottom and pistachio nuts all over the place. This is an example of a renovation distracting me from doing a spring cleaning that would’ve probably avoided this in the first place. I’ve tossed a ton of food and put out traps (6 mouse traps and 1 rat trap) and am using this opportunity to clean out the basement. Still, yuck. Live and learn

If you decide to use traps, note that a rat trap will *not* catch mice.  It’s too big and will miss them.  Set up a few mouse traps along the wall using peanut butter or bacon as bait.

Are there any brownstones that DON’T have mice in the cellar? Our cat does a good job at controlling ones in our living space, but I think eliminating them in the cellar iis like trying to hold back the tide.

mouse will be small.  if you did not know if it was a rat ore mouse, it was a mouse.  I have spoken to a lot of people about mice and a lot of country people about them.  the consenus seems to be that mice will leave now that the warmer weather is here – unless there is a nest and then they will stay.   We have gotten mice every year in this city and even when I was on LI.  my grandparents always got mice.  a trap will get one – but if there are more it may get difficult.    See what cate says.  plug holes using brillo.  plug small holes.  Place traps along walls.  do not put food in the traps at first and do not set them.  just set them out for a week or two.  then, set them and use different things – but most people I know swear by peanut butter.  read more about this on the ‘net as there are other tricks to using traps and you have to use those tricks or the traps will be useless.   steve

Call an exterminator to check out your basement. You may have holes and they can get in through the party walls (and floor if it is dirt). If there are nests and holes, the exterminator will find them. If not, then there is nothing to worry about. The exterminator will either check it out for free or charge you something very minor for his time to come out if he doesn’t find anything. Traps are not very helpful. You need to plug holes.

My first suggestion is to grab a glass of wine, and relax.   *A* mouse does not indicate an infestation. You have work being done ie: disturbing the status quo of their envirnoment, and there’s an open cellar door.  Of course it got in that way 🙂 This is ny.   If it was a rat, in most cases, you’d be sure (baby rat, excepted, but also unlikely) – how big was the thing that scurried by you? anyways – can’t help you with traps – never used any (wife has cats) but don’t be surprised if you see a few more.  Whenever there is reno work going on in the neighborhood (even several doors down, as long as it’s on the same “row”) – the whole block sees an increase in rodent activity.  In your (shared, btw) rooflines, under your foundations, and in your yard, there are many myriad creatures waiting and willing to intrude 🙂 my only advice would be don’t panic, set traps if you need to, but don’t assume any infestation – it’s likely just getting away from whatever work is being done.
