Annoying Porch Flies

OK, I have these annoying small flies that are flying around on my porch near my front door.  I have a large porch overhang, so I’m assuming that they are there to beat the heat because they are only there during the day when the weather is hot.  I tried a fly trap, but it smelled like rotton flesh, and attracted all of the flies from the neighborhood, both large and small.  I cant find any standing water, or dead animals, or any other thing that I would think that they should be attracted to.  So I’m reaching out to the Stoners.  Any ideas.  I am hoping not to have to run the fly gauntlet when coming home…

It sounds like you may have a drain somewhere that is a breeding ground for them and then they mature and hang out by the porch.  I have the same problem.  someone told me to have a clear bag full of water in a visible area where they congregate.  So I filled a ziplock bag and hung it and it helped.  You can also try to put a few pennies in the bag.  They said it has something to do with their eye seeing a big bug eye reflected back at them or something.  It works too it cut my flies down by quite a bit.

Try some fly paper.  It doesn’t smell, it’s cheap, and it does work.  Flies land on it because they like to land on things, and they never take off again.

I do not know if this is true or not but it is something I was told.  I used to live in North Carolina where most of the older houses have big porches (they needed someplace to sit in the hot summer; tv and ac has made the porch obsolete).  At one point I noticed that the ceilings of most all the porches were painted sky blue or maybe a little lighter.  I asked a local why and that person told me it was to keep the flies away.  I never followed that statement up with any research but have often wondered if there is any truth to it.   Steve
