stripping floor molding that may have lead

I just bought a 1950s coop unit, and need to replace the floor molding.  It’s nothing special, but it’s ugly and broken in a few places.  But I am concerned about the possible presence of lead in the underlying paint layers (3 year old will live in the new  unit). Can any ordinary painter remove the molding in a way that minimizes lead dust?  Do I have to hire someone special to do this?  I am on a budget, so don’t want to act like my apartment is a superfund site, but at the same time I don’t want to create hazards for my kid.  Advice? Thanks.

These worries, IMO, are totally overblown in most cases.  Your situation, for example, is unlikely to cause any dangerous levels of lead (presuming there is any lead paint at all).  Removing whole pieces of moulding should not create much dust.  And, even if it did, your child would have to ingest a LOT of it in order to be harmed.  Like, a lot. Having said that, to be most safe you can follow the clean up described above.  And, if you really want to be sure, hire a company to test for lead post-clean up.  Search the archives for the name of the firm we used, or just google it. Good luck.

suzanne, their is protocol to follow on this. The only way you will know the painting contractor is doing this is if you watch over them or find someone you trust, has been referred to you. 99% of contractors have taken this course. You need to know who follows it and checking on DOB will not cut it.

Every licensed contractor. Check their name and license number in the DOB system. The basic method is to wet the stuff being removed, drape the area, cover room entrances with taped plastic. Then you or someone you hire should clean afterward with a shop vac and wet cloths to get all the dust up. Three times.

There is a certification for lead paint. Every contractor in NY should have it. If you are concerned and if it will make you feel more comfortable make sure to check if the person doing the work is certified.
