How much should I pay to have staircase stripped and stained

Hi Guys, I am looking to have my original oak staircase srtipped and stained. What cost would I be looking at to have this done. One person quoted me 10k which I think is a little high.   Thanks in advance

10K could be alot- or it could be a little, the OP doesn;t say how many flights of stairway, or what’s included.- just treads and risers? how about balusters, newels, and handrail. and what about inside and design stair stringers and stringer panels? OP doesn’t say if it’s painted or varnished now ; that sure makes a difference. And is the OP getting a quote from a contractor following EPA RRP regulations, with all insurances etc, or a”fly by nighter” whose winging it? or someone somewhere in between?

We just had our stairs stripped and stained this week and we got a great price (under 1/5th the price you were quoted), but the flooring people were already at our house sanding and refinishing about 4 rooms anyway, so we paid that price as an add-on.  That said, I think for that price we didn’t get as much as I’d wanted, but I also didn’t want to pay much more as the stairs were an add-on.  Our people didn’t strip OR stain the risers, only the treads, and said they prefer to paint the risers and strip/stain the treads.  So now we have gorgeous risers with dark reddish brown color and a distressed look (black areas) from years of wear, so a little worn but pretty, contrasted with sanded and stained treads that are in better shape, but they didn’t match the stain that well.  The treads are more brown – dark but not really red.  It’s livable but it’s like the war of the browns – the treads are one brown, the risers slightly different, the banister slightly different.  But it was a complete challenge just getting a dark enough stain that it didn’t look horrible, so we let the rest go. it’s still nice.

I would suggest you give a few more contractors a call, and compare the prices, eventually you will see a similarity and get a ball park range. Search before making any decisions.

10K sounds quite high. I would try De Gamba. They did ours at a fair price (spindles and edges were removed stripped offsite, reinstalled and polyurethaned). We couldn’t be happier.They were totally professional.  However, we had somewhat less work done. Straight flat surfaces that need to be stripped are not complicated and should not cost that much. I do know tht onsite work is more expensive.
