Reliable lead paint testing?

How reliable are those kits you get at Home Depot to test for lead paint? I have some paint chips from a ceiling and also a back wall I’d like to check, but want to make sure I get accurate results to help determine if I need to get lead abatement guys or just regular painters. I’m sure someone has gone through this before, so I’d love an up to date reply- thanks!

The tests are accurate. FYI, you don’t necessarily need lead abatement professionals, only a EPA “lead safe certified” renovator or painter. (I am a contractor for full disclosure). Completely removing all the lead will cost a fortune. As long as it is contained, i.e.  not peeling or flaking off, you can paint over lead paint. You run into problems if you need to disturb the lead paint. Don’t sand it, scrape it, bash holes in the wall without following lead safe techniques.

I have used them and every place where I thought we would find lead paint, the test indicated for lead.  They are good in that the chemical in them seems to react more – turning a darker pink – if you are dealing with a higher concentration of lead. Steve
