Paint color for staircase/hallway

We are getting ready to paint over the yellow woodwork we have lived with for the last 7 years in our PS brownstone- it’s on the staircase, coat-tree, doors, wood paneling, etc. What paint colors have you used? I’m looking for some shade of white, not too stark.  Also any recommendations for the railing (shade of brown?) and the actual stairs.

http://www.housebeautiful.com/decorating/colors/paint-best-sellers-0308?click=main_sr#slide-1 I find House Beautiful’s color descriptions helpful for narrowing down the field a bit. This slide show covers some basic whites.  All of the trim in my house is painted BM White Dove. It’s a crisp creamy white and seems to look good with any wall color. Can you refinish the rail? That would probably look better than painting it brown. If not, I might highlight that it’s not finished wood (rather than try to fake it with a brown) and go for black or navy.
