product to rustproof a steel railing without painting it an ugly color black

My husband and I renovated a townhouse on State Street and we have a deck with a steel railing. We would like to rustproof it but would like to maintain the industrial look of our entire home. We are looking for a product in which to use in order to do this. We have consulted with several contractors , all of which do not get it. They have suggested the typical rustproof it and paint it black which we are definitely not interested in. Any ideas? I would really like to get this taken care of. It is really starting to rust. I suppose you are looking to keep the look of the bare steel?  Have it clear coated.  It will require upkeep.
