Need a great landscaper for backyard and roof deck
Any recommendations for what I imagine is a mid-range Brooklyn landscaper? Just got a quote at 150K+, which is way out of my league, but do want something kind of done — no fountains or elaborate brickwork or anything crazy, but attractive fencing, some topography and lots of planters and planting. Someone who understands how to make the view from the back better all year round, without totally decking every inch. Thanks!

Actually, the nursery we bought the plants from designed our garden. The basic layout was already there, but they picked the plants, designed the beds, and laid out the plants in the exact spot they would go.

I was and wasn’t happy with Little Miracles. The finished product is quite nice, very happy there. The guys that work for them are very respectful of your space. What I was unhappy with was that they kept pushing off some things that needed repair a few months later. I eventually gave up. Not surprising that this happened since it does in a lot of cases, but I can’t fully endorse them. But like I said, the work was very good. I think you can go the route Cate did if you’re willing to essentially GC the project and design it yourself. It will definitely be a lot cheaper that way. With the landscape design places you’re paying for end to end (design through finish). Definitely a premium to be paid for that.

$150 K seems extremely high but I didn’t realize it includes the roof. Not easy to get things up to the roof and if you don’t already have a structure up there and reinforcements for it, that is costly. We got a quote for cedar fencing, same size, $4,000\. We fully planted the backyard with lots of prep work and tons of extra materials such as cardboard and mulch (no hardscaping) for — well, now I’m forgetting, because we did it in two or three stages (fall, spring) — but I think it was about $3,000\. And I thought that was kind of expensive. We don’t have any planters, but they always seem very costly. We did have a contractor-handyman make us two raised beds as part of other jobs for about $100 labor.

I’ve seen lots of price points. I got my backyard done with 2 bluestone patios, new fencing (pine), two ipe benches and some plantings around the perimeter for under 25K. I was quoted 40k for just fencing from one crew. My yard is slightly smaller than yours. I got quotes from a few places. The Artist Garden Little Miracles Designs (ultimately went with them) DIG Blue in Green (did a friend’s) + a few others I can’t recall right now. Would have gone with any of these. I remember Dig was very willing to start with a budget and work from there.

Cate, yes 150K This is for hardscaping, lights, fencing, planting, irrigation, etc on the roof and in back. Have no idea what’s fair, and this guy does very cool, high end, work, it seems, but not in my stratosphere! Our contractor was going to charge us 15K for 45 x 20′ of ipe fencing and 4k for roof planters and we nixed it, thinking we could find a lot cheaper. As I said, we’re really in the dark here, need to shop around….

Would you consider commissioning a design from a landscape architect or garden designer, then subbing out the installation work? Might be a lot cheaper. For hardscaping, I recommend Shamin Ahamed: (347) 219-7909\. He’s an indoor-outdoor mason/concrete guy. In our backyard he laid a bluestone patio, created a gravel area with steppping stones (replacing a failed lawn), installed a fence, erected a wood shed (bought elsewhere), installed belgian block edging, and repainted our deck railings. He can be a bit hard to pin down but he’s honest, very affordable and does good work. Tell him Roz recommended him to you.
