Last minute day laborer?

I need to spread 20 cubic yards of topsoil around my yard on Monday, and I’m looking for two strong guys to help me. Warning: It’s going to be hot–forecast says 97–and it’s pretty hard work. (We just finished spreading the first 20 yards.) The dirt will be in a pile at the foot of my driveway and needs to be wheeled to the backyard and spread. also park around the corner, walk up to them on foot and pick you want.  it will avoid the fight to jump in your car and you can pick the guys that don’t have a tatoo of a tear drop or “MS-13” on their neck

Not exactly in your area, but in the bensonhurt/borough park area, i know of a few spots.   65th st and 18th avenue, at the corner, outside the starbucks.   From there, further down 18th avenue, you’ll see those willing to work gathered at varous corners, all the way up through 24th avenue.   Note – these guys tend to be lower skilled, or younger (As it’s been explained to me, there’s a hierarchy of sorts and until you work your way up to one of the prime spots)  you won’t find cement/bricking guys, or whatnot, but for this type of work it should be fine. I’ll always provide lunch, but many don’t.  Since it’s a hot day – grab a few gallons of cold water to give them. Alternatively – 20 cubic yards, while sizeable, isn’t overly tremendous.  School’s out, and a couple of able bodied highschool or college guys could handle it, if you have access to any (My nephews are my favorite helpers, and they appreciate the extra cash – you also don’t have to worry about strangers in your home) I’m surprised i haven’t seen a bunch of  pro-union-only cries of foul in this thread.

It can be a little intimidating at first to pull up at a work site and have them realize why you are there and surround the car.  If you leave the passenger door unlocked, some even get in – and of course, me being a guy, it is easy for me to ask them to get out.  You do sometimes have to admire their presumptuisness; it means they want to work. Now there are not too many at the Bed Stuy HD, but at Gleason’s paint where I go, dozens surround us.  The sites with a lot of people will also be the ones where you can find those you are most comfortable with (later in the day and at smaller sites, the choice is slimmer).  We take some time and talk to them and check which one’s have the confidence to look at us yet still have an easy manner.  I have hired my most successful helpers this way and some have been with me for years.   $120/day is ok for a couple of days but when I take someone on for a regular arrangement, I start them a little higher.  Buy them lunch and drinks. I am going to call my current helper and see if his girlfreind is free.  she grew up on a farm and she works for us sometimes and never complains and is always apprec.  I will give them your # (by the way, once you have one good person, they will know the other good people and will have numbers in their phone). Assuming this post doesn’t work outy, you can try either  Lowe’s parking lot, or the U-Haul parking lot on Third Ave., there’s usually day laborers at both locations, but the going rate for one day’s work seems like it’s been set at $150\. If you post an approximate location of where you are, I’m sure other Brownstoner’s can provide other locations as well.
