Getting a lawn on a deck.
I’m buying a building that is fully built out on the first floor ie, 20×100. I’ll be living upstairs and want a yard but obviously I look out onto the roof of the first floor (20×50). I dont want a deck. I dont want a green roof. I want a yard with grass. Is that even possible? Okay, how about a half court then?

Get a structural engineer to tell you what kind of load you can handle and repost to the forum. Waterlogged soil is heavy hence the popularity of perlite/wildflowers.

a client of mine in manhattan has a lawn on one side of his penthouse (pool and deck on the other side}, so it is possible. As I remember,he put down three inch thick insulation covered with 4 or 5 inches of earth and a layer of sod. The big deal was that the building is concrete slab construction and could take the additional load…doubt if a standard roof in brooklyn could handle the additonal weight plus live load…you would need astructural engineer to scope it out, and I doubt if it will be cheap

Well, yes and no. It wouldn’t be a good idea to put dirt and traditional grass on a deck. You’re looking at a heavy, moisture-intensive choice, which is not advisable. You could have a green roof with wild grasses and flowers native to the area, so that they have lower water requirements. The idea is that once established, your deck could live on rainwater alone.
