Don't want a tree

Can I request a tree NOT be planted in front of my house? We enjoy the sun light and do not want it blocked by a tree.Many years ago there was a tree that grew through the sewer lineand cost a lot of money to repair.

Is the 20 feet apart rule not changed? Friday, someone from the city marked out a spot and it was more like 10 feet to the left of an existing tree, which itself 10 feet to the left from another existing tree.
Anyone else besides 311 to call for NOT Planting a tree?

trees now have to be 20 feet apart so maybe u can dodge the bullet that way. U could ask if you could plant a smaller understory tree, Eastern redbud the golden variety only grows to 20 feet and has less invasive roots. FYI  the city now is running out of money to plant trees so …….

Let me clarify.The tree that broke the sewer line is long gone. There has not been a tree for over 30 years.I simply want to know if I can ask the city not to plant one of the million trees in front of my home.My block has many old trees that are in need of pruning .Most if not all of these old treees have cauesd sidewalk damage. These trees are very old and while nice they block the street lights and cause certian parts of the block to be very dark.

This is a classic “chicken and egg” which-came-first-story. Tree roots are attracted to water, so if your sewer is broken and leaking water, trees roots will grow into the void. But the roots don’t find sewers and break into them. If your sewer line is in good repair, the trees won’t bother. There are street trees that are 60 years old and the residents have no sewer break-ins.

you can call 311 for just about anything.  but you don’t own the sidewalk or what’s underneath it, so the city can plant it if it chooses.  the city’s trees program is focusing on tree planting in areas with high incidence of asthma and low levels of greenery because of the proven effects that trees have in cleaning the air.  also, their current planting specs focus on building out a proper tree pit that make it less likely that roots will grow into the sewer.
