Venting range thrugh the chimney.

http://cdn.brownstoner.com/4e809d0e3ed08-.jpg

Hi. We are renovating 1st floor kitchen in our 2 store row house. The kitchen has unused chimneys from old coal stowes. I want to conect the range hood to one of the chimneys as depicted on the attached photo. Would I have any problems with this setup?

We vented a hood up 3 floors to the roof. Be careful how many turns the piping takes — the air velocity goes down dramatically with each twist. The fan is on the roof with a spring-loaded timer switch my the stove. The timer switch makes sure we don’t leave it on by mistake (since it makes virtually no noise by the stove). But the fan has to be powerful and hence pretty loud (on the roof). You might think about how to minimize the noise. Hopefully your’s won’t need as powerful a fan as our’s  — and will be less noisy as a result.

You should line it before you send food-grade grease into a vertical masonry chimney.

Did it myself in my house.  works great.  make sure you have some sort of rain guard and animal/debri barrier at the top.

Just to underscore, this is an unused chimney. It is not connected to anything else. the hood’s manual defines acceptable vent as <140' in length. And the chimney is <30' in lenght. It does not have any other limitations stated.
