I second Ben’s rec.  We just finished a small kitchen renovation with him (minor construction, Ikea cabinets, floor refinishing, patch/paint, appliance installation, tile, counter, plumbing, new electrical).  We were very new to working with a contractor and I liked that he was honest and explained things.  He was on site every day when the subcontactors were there (except the floor guy because he’d just be in the way!).  Also, he seemed to really like the challege of trying to figure stuff out.  When certain Ikea pieces didn’t fit or were missing, he rigged up solutions that I’m sure were better than the original.  Not cheap, but I’d consider his prices fair and reasonable.
