microhood and exhaust fan

I am renovating my tiny kitchen and the contractor suggests using a microhood due to space contraints and the fact that the stove is against an interior wall. I have a couple of questions:

1) I know microhoods are not where near as good as vented hoods, but is there is a best of the worst, you’re aware of?   2) I cook a lot and I was wondering whether it makes sense to also add an exhaust fan on the wall in the kitchen that is on exterior. There is a window on that wall, do exhaust fan window combos exist? Thanks!

First, ascertain the size of the hood that is recommended for your range. Do not use a combined microwave range hood. I have found these to be inferior and inconvenient because of their location. A vented hood is best but does not always work because of spatial constraints. A good recirculating hood with a charcoal filter will likely suffice. Alternatively, install a window fan. The recircuating fans are pretty much good for taking the oil and grease out of the air. There is a filter/grease trap in the recirculating fan. If you are concerned about getting the hot air out than go with an additional exhaust window fan when needed.  All microwave recirculating fans are 300 cfm. With that being said there is a whole host of microwaves you can choose from based on your budget. Maytag, Frigidaire, LG, GE, Bosch, Whirlpool, Viking, etc.  My contact info is in my profile should you want prices on particular models. Levi Capland

Wow, I just fell over reading that!…I agree, I lived in a place 18 years w/o a fan or even a recirc hood and it was fine, but then I don’t deep fry or cook in a way that might be too messy. SImple solutions are sometimes OK, a recirc hood should be fine as long as you clean the filters often.

I’ve installed a variety of exhausts (including commercial kitchen).  I have found recirculating exhausts to work just fine.  I cook a lot and don’t have exhaust in my kitchen.  I just put a basic fan in the window on an as needed basis.  Just make sure the fan is pushing air out instead of drawing it in.  There are fans meant to fit in open windows as well.
