Lowe's in Gowanus - kitchen experiences?
Can anyone recommend a specific person in the Lowe’s kitchen department for putting together a new kitchen? I’m gonna be spending some money on this, and I’d rather make an appointment w/ someone who knows what they’re doing instead of just rolling the dice on whoever’s at the desk when I walk in. If you used this Lowe’s, did you have a good experience with someone in kitchens?

The Ikea guy (really from Traemand) was very nice and professional, easy to work with. Ikea also has a minimum countertop purchase, he told me, but it’s 20 sq ft, a bit less than Lowe’s. He was honest in saying I could find a 3rd party supplier for just the countertop area I need. It’s just one more thing to add to the pile of stuff to do… but I might look around for a supplier. Again, the Ikea countertop was almost as much as the cabinets. Anybody know any good countertop suppliers? Looking into quartz composite.

Update: So I went down there and talked with them. The woman was knowledgable, but she definitely wanted some quick decisions made from all the choices, whereas I really haven’t had time to go over all the different brands and styles in advance. We literally picked the brand and style within the first 30 seconds. Which I’m fine with. We went about designing the cabinets, which was pretty simple for this kitchen. I had a few ideas… she didn’t really like them and dissuaded me from them… which was fine, she was more or less right. But the problem came when we got to the countertops. I didn’t want anything too cheap or too fancy, but in the middle, with good durability. So we went with quartz. I have, like most New Yorkers, a small kitchen here. Only about a 3 or 4 foot run of counter space. She said the quartz companies only sell you a minimum of 25 sq ft. No less, even if you don’t need it. I said huh? So what happens to the extra 15 sq ft that I can’t use? Do they give me the extra piece? Do they keep it in a warehouse with my name on it? I’m guessing they just sell it to the next fool, so we both pay for it and only one of us gets it. I said that was ridiculous and she said she’d give me the number of the countertop rep and he would explain the ‘reason’. And this stuff is not cheap, it’s a significant part of the cost. I saved the file with her, but Ikea dudes are coming today to measure. I’ll see if they come up with something less crazy.

My experiences with Lowe’s salespeople have generally been good — knowledgeable about the product and responsive to problems. But I would not rely on them as designers. The real issue is that Lowe’s suppliers suck. I ordered several sink base Kraftmaid cabinets through Lowe’s a few years back and every piece came in wrong, sometimes wrong again a second time. Always much later than promised. A six month ordeal just to get the pieces I ordered, and even then I had to take one that was oddly framed but that the contractor could work with. For such a high volume and supposedly standardized operation, the repeated failure to build the cabinets to the norm was stunning. I would look at your budget — if you can’t go up a notch from Lowe’s/Kraftmaid, then save yourself time, money and agita with Ikea cabinets and put the savings into nice countertops, backsplash etc to dress it up.

With all due respect to Ed, in my experience, architects will make a kitchen look good but know nothing about the functioning of a kitchen. You might have better luck with a certified kitchen designer.

There’s a woman there who is great, mid 50s/60s, blonde, eastern european (I can’t remember her name, sorry!). I had the measurements of the space from our architect and she was great at figuring out how to maximize the space. That said, I’m not thrilled with the quality, specifically the end panels.

The people at Lowe’s are not trained designers, just salespeople. Hire an architect for a few hours of design consulting then go to Lowe’s to choose and buy the appliances. Ed Kopel Architects, PC

I tried to use that lowes, and after dealing with 3 separate people realized none of them really knew what i wanted or anything really, that steeped out of the box of whatever the computer said. I went to home depot and had a much better experience. Please note i’m not for or against either one – there are many things i prefer to go to lowes for, and vice versa – in this case, i found the cabinet guys at HD were much better and the appliance guys were low pressure, and worked with me on exactly what i wanted (re-doing 3 kitchens in my rental unit in this case, so it was a big sale) I may have another kitchen coming up, so if you do find someone knowledgeable at lowes, please let me know… their prices were a bit more attractive, and the 10% coupon makes it a no brainer (hd wouldn’t accept it for cabinet purchases unless you have the actual plastic card, not the computer printout from lowes)
