Kitchen and Bathroom Bid Feedback

We received a bid of $42k per bathroom to gut two bathrooms, one 6×8′ and one 7×10″. This is in a non-fancy area near Park Slope. The same bid included about $70k for a 10×10′ kitchen, plus a 3×10 island. All of these jobs are pretty straightforward, e.g., no obvious problems or leaks, going into an apartment that was gutted 8 years ago. The contractor ostensibly wants to gut everything because we want different bathroom fixtures, so he would take it down to the studs instead of (for example, in the kitchen) working on top of the existing drywall instead of replacing it. This seems wasteful to me. I feel like I should be able to get TWO bathrooms for $42k. The fixtures we are considering are pretty basic — nothing fancy– and we would keep the current toilets, and shower in one of the bathrooms. For the kitchen, we’d be looking at semi-custom cabinets in the kitchen. I’d like to do Ikea, but the contractor balked at that. The total job includes a few other things, like painting and floor refinishing. Does anyone have any thoughts on these bids? Thanks in advance for your opinions.
