Full length shower doors?

Does anyone here have a walk in shower where the door is full height? My wife has been looking on Houzz etc and is wanting to do the shower door full height so the steam stays in the shower area but i’m worried about mold etc. Any thoughts?

Last year I purchased the full length shower door supplied by https://wonder-glass.ca/ that look fantastic and glide very smoothly like a dream. The quality of the glass and hardware is good. I agree with your wife that full length shower door is super convenient in use.

my personal experience – – you need to put a fan in the shower itself so when done w/ shower you can remove said steam so ceiling does not mold. I have both fantech and panasonic whisperline in different bathrooms, split with a Y connector – one vent over toilet, one in shower. I prefer the fantech and mount it far away from bathroom. I’d like to say that it prevents mold, but it doesn’t completely stop it because there is still some trapped steam near the bottom – you will still have to leave the door open after shower until you are finished with your routine. Your housecleaner should clean grout, tiles and caulk with a product that contains bleach every week (or every two weeks max).

Add a maually operated tilt transom above doors (operate like vinvyl shades) and a vent above showers’ ceiling. SLu2

I can barely reach it, but I almost never use that shower. The toilet is close enough that I could stand on it or use a hairbrush, etc. to push it, because it is easy to turn. My guy has no trouble reaching it and does turn it.

@AnotherPoster, yeh I’ve seen that design a lot on Houzz and I was wondering how “often” people open it, eg my wife is short and probably couldn’t reach up the 8ft or so to open it.

Our steam shower has a transom window (best way to describe it) at the top that rotates. Once the shower is over you can shut the door and tilt the window to let moisture out of the top. It works fairly well.

The only thing to do is leave the door open and squeegee like a maniac. We have a steam shower in master bath, with the exhaust fan in the middle of the bathroom. It’s not a big deal. No mold yet but in the damp summer months we’ve been known to sham-wow that sucker in addition to squeegeeing.

lol in this case its my wife who wants this look and she’s also the one who wants the walk in shower area super steamy….. so I figure as long as we aren’t going to get black plague mold then if we do it her way and only have a 1″ gap at the top and bottom then she has to live with the consequences, basically what I do want to know is has someone here done this….and regretted it? (eg what ammunition can you give me to win this argument if its going to be a really big problem)

It is a serious issue and I have had many verbal “altercations” with the so called designers, with whom looks always trump reason. I totally agree that accumulating steam (while still in the shower) is an annoying problem. We’ve tried a second fan in the shower, but effect has been minimal. In luxury condo buildings developers always insist on leaving some space above the door, but they are afraid from tenants’ complaints and don’t care so much about pristine aesthetics. I am very interested to hear from people who have and use the full height shower enclosures. Maybe someone of the colleagues who regularly chime in here, could share an insight 🙂

Yes. Our house has 11 feet ceilings. We did reduce the ceiling height in this bath to add the vent but it is still probably 9+ feet. You might see what lengths they have available. I know we had to order these custom in width because the room is narrow.

yeh but we are talking about an 8′ door that goes from the top to bottom, it looks like on this one you have a few feet above your shower door.

As for mold, we just have the kids (this is their bathroom) leave the door open after they get out and use the vent when they are taking their shower and we never have a mold problem. The pictures make them look shorter than they are. I am 6′ tall and easily walk under the rail bar when I get in the shower without ducking. Hope this helps! Or were you talking about floor to ceiling height for a sealed chamber?

We did our main floor small bath with a room-width step-in shower (no tub) where the curb height is probably 4 inches. We bought really heavy modern full height shower doors from Disco-Bath down in Bay Ridge off 86th street. Each door probably weighs 70 pounds and are on what look like industrial rollers but hidden under the cover. They had a thinner version but we wanted these massive thick hanging glass slabs and they look and function really nicely. I don’t quite remember how much they cost (seems like around $600 for the really thick versions) but they have a website and a couple showroom stores down there. They do all sorts of sizes. Let me see if I can figure out how to post a picture or two.
