Custom Kitchen Cabinetry

We are beginning a kitchen renovation in our brownstone and we have been collecting bids from several custom cabinet makers. The prices vary widely and I am having trouble discerning the difference between all the choices. Does anyone have any experience with the following cabinet makers; Honeybrook, Cabico, Crown Point, Rutt Regency, or Plain and Fancy? Or perhaps you could recommend one that is not on our list. Sorry i havent used any of those cabinet makers – and their bids will vary because of their costs and their profit goals. make sure they are all quoting the same thing…plywood boxes, same wood species, same draw boxes, same faces etc. Kitchen cabinets take a lot of abuse and the good ones last for decades if not longer and the bad ones last a few years. Most custom cabinet makers provide pretty good quality but look for dove tailed drawers, good quality tracks and rails etc..it makes a difference in price but the good ones will look and work good in 10 years – the others wont last

We have a P&F kitchen in our weekend house, and are in the process of putting one in our apartment. They are well made, and have a great finish. You can also look at Woodmode — they have a showroom in the A&D Building. Rutt also is known to be at the top of the cabinet heap. When I was last in the MCKB showroom on 19th Street there was a Rutt kitchen on display (and for sale at a discount).

I don’t get it…. Why do people consistently look for “custom cabinet” designers/builders–?? This is one product where going with Home Depot makes much more sense, as HD has at least 4 brands from LOW end (think IKEA type, pressboard) to HIGH end (Decora brand, solid maple)– none are manufactured by HD, they simply resell some other company’s product… But here’s the important part… Home Depot adds about 1000% more value to the cabinets. The HD design rep will sit with you for free and design your kitchen from top to bottom. The added benefit is that their resold “brands” have literally thousands of options for cabinet types, colors, finishing, hardware, etc. We just had a HD designer sit with us for two hours for each of 6 weekends to design our kitchen…. They produced 3D models of the complete kitchen, including appliances, and other products we did not buy through HD. Yes, it was a $22k installation– appliance wall, island, sideboard– but we went through dozens of revisions as we settled into the myriad of cabinets available. The service was invaluable. Do yourself a favor, and before you go with a “custom cabinet” builder take a look at Home Depot’s Decorate line.

There’s semihandmade who make custom doors for IKEA kitchen cabinets. They are in LA so I’ve no idea what the shipping costs would be. But the range of options looks great and they are constantly being written up on all the shelter/design blogs. We have an IKEA kitchen in our rental and it’s still in perfect condition even though I don’t adore the look.
