Architect, interior designer or contractor? Or a combo?

Hi. I’d like to remodel my kitchen. I’m interested in a new layout, not simply tearing out old cabinets/appliances and replacing them with new ones. I will eventually need help deciding on the “look” of my kitchen, but at this point, I”m more interested in making it a more efficient use of space. Who helps me do this? An architect, interior designer or contractor? And does anyone have any recommendations for any of the three? It’s a fairly small kitchen, so I’m not sure how many agencies will take on such a small project. Thanks! Melissa

According to me an Interrior Designer can do this all. There must be some work of contractor. but an Architect not at all.

Architect. They are the only one who can design it and file it (if needed) and bid it properly. And it is not always more expensive. That’s a myth. There is a lot of cost savings in the 1-stop approach of using a qualified professional.

I am a homeowner, not a professional selling services, but Jan is right. I did a much larger renovation — a partial gut including a rental apartment and an upper triplex — but the kitchen and baths were where using a designer was crucial. I used an architect only to supply the drawings and do the DoB filings, but the design and planing work was done by a designer who had done hundreds of baths and kitchens. Even if you know what you want (I did) and have a very specific style and colors in mind (I did), a professional thinks of a thousand things you never would have thought of. Designing the kitchen space was something I spent a lot of time on with my designer and I got a fantastic kitchen that works efficiently for cooking and entertaining. A professional also brings relationships with suppliers and contractors. I found my GC through him, had custom cabinets made for less than the cost of Lowes, used his appliance guy (with a discount), located multiple quotes for countertop fabrication, glass suppliers (for inside cabinet fronts), lighting styles, etc. NYC is a competitive marketplace and with the right person, you can get custom for the price of off the shelf. Interview two or three folks and get quotes. I paid my designer an hourly rate — and in the end it was a bargain. Good luck and have fun!

Hi, I’m an interior designer and actually specialize in small kitchens. The contractors I work with file for electrical permits, etc. when they are needed. I love to cook and love the nuts and bolts aspects of kitchen design as well as the beautiful finish parts of the project. My focus is on making the most of every inch of space, for example by utilizing the space under the cabinets pull out drawers that store baking pans, canned goods, etc. I also like to make it possible for more than one person at a time, to work comfortabaly in a small kitchen. Hi Melissa, I can help design your Kitchen. I have a millwork carpenter-contractor/plumber/electrician I work closely with, that can build it. Depending if you keep or change the locations of your gas pipes / water supply / drains locations / electrical outlets,…etc. will determine whether or not you will need to file + pull a permit, and which kind of permit. Hi Melissa, There are lots of reasons to hire a professional, and one of the best ones is to SAVE money. One mistake can pay for the fee an architect or interior designer charges. I have done 40 kitchens or so in the last 10 years, so I ( or any professional) will be able to help you look at the space in ways that you may not have. The folks at Loews are there to sell you cabinets and do cabinet layouts; they are not there to help you reconsider the space. They are good at what they do, but if you need planning help that might include part of another room or a closet, they will not be able to help you see that, and they cannot help you if you need anything custom, which is often the best way to use the space in a small kitchen efficiently. So, speak w/ a professional. You may not end up hiring someone, but at least you will have explored your options. Jan

Not everyone forks over major cash to an architect. You can get dimensions of kitchen space and then and go to Lowes. They have the software to create a combination of designs for you. You buy the cabinets from them, then get a contractor to install. I have done a few kitchens for my brownstone and used KraftMaid cabinets, which are a medium priced semi-custom line. Home Depot was a nightmare. Don’t go there. Lowes was great. I got a very nice design, bought the cabinets from them, went to a dealer to get got my own granite – cheap – (got it honed), picked out fixtures, bought refrigerator, stove and dishwasher myself and had contractor install. Not a big deal. You can do this relatively cheaply and well with a little research.

Here’s why you should hire an architect: An architect is licensed by the state and acts as a fiduciary; An architect will provide you with documents and specification that you can bid competitively to a number of contractors; An architect is the only professional with a full understanding of buildings — your renovation will likely affect adjacent areas; An architect will confirm that you are getting what you paid for.

I agree with the first response, I have no idea what the second response is all about, and, there is a third way. Those of us who have kitchen expertise can, in somewhat simple situations such as you describe, help you arrive at the best use of the space. I’ve found that asking the right questions leads a person to the kitchen layout that suits them best. Whether it passes the most efficient use of space test or not is somewhat subjective because different people will see it differently. So walking through a design with questions about how you use a given space more times than not, brings you to a design that you love, in part because you designed it! I really hope that makes sense… As for the “look”, a similar process can be applied. I dont call myself a designer but I have designed, installed and cooked in a lot of kitchens. While not schooled per-se, an on the ground hands on approach may be something to start out with. If ultimately some greater professional is deemed needed, so be it.
