adding shower to small half bath

I want to add a small shower to a tiny toilet and sink bathroom. This will require taking a chunk out of the kitchen so that there is enough room for the shower. Does anyone have a good contractor to recommend for this? We are on a very tight budget, apartment is located in Manhattan. Thanks!

Bruce, or anybody, I would be happy to talk with you about the rapid and recent increase in the cost of comp insurance for Home Improvement Contractors. It seems analogues to car insurance, but it isn’t. Thanks for your second. You can find me in the directory under shower stalls.

I’ll 2nd Green Mtn’s drift. AT a minimum a licensed plumber would need to file with the Plumbing Dep’t to tie into existing wastes and vents. Because you would be on the hook for damage to other apartments in the building when water leaks, you would want at least to be able to say that you used a NYC licensed plumber for the feeds and wastes. Tile and finishes is a little grayer an area. It’s one thing to have to pay for their damages, it’s another to be negligent and subject to penalties with nothing but your desire to stay within your “tight budget” as an excuse. I am admittedly wandering off topic here, but I often wonder if owners “tight budget” is mostly a desire to “not get ripped off”, or “not pay retail”. Given the dramatic increase in property values, I can’t understand scrimping as if that’s the only way to get ahead. Maybe you can’t afford at this time to renovate the half bath. WHile purchasing wisely is an excellent idea, saving money for the wrong reasons makes no sense to me. Would you consider not having your car insured because it’s cheaper?

correct me if i’m wrong, but an apt in manhattan implies that it is a condo or a co-op, in which case adding plumbing is not a small feat where shared building infrastructure exists. In any case, the board of either should probably be requiring a licensed and insurance certificates, if not an architect for both you and them (paid by you). The latter could be waived if the board is not that sharp. But don’t be surprised if your budget is not sufficient, because from here it sounds like it could turn into a big job in a manhattan building.

When you go for that chunk out of the kitchen, do watch out for the occasional structurally important bearing wall… Old buildings are not always easy to tell what is weight bearing but there are some simple precautions you can take either way. The trickier issue that someone more qualified than I, such as the “Green Mountain” commenter above is; opening up the floor and tying into the existing plumbing to drain the shower. Old plumbing, downstairs neighbors and coop boards may add complexity and cost you may want to consider sooner rather than later. Feel free to contact me if you you’d like to discuss this further. Hi, thanks for the reply! I would love to discuss tiles and drainage!!! As this is your specialty, would you be willing to bid on the project? I’m new to this forum, so I don’t know if it’s even ok to ask you to do that. My email is monicaxyz@mac.com. thanks!

This is my specialty, but my costs as a licensed contractor make it hard for me to compete with unlicensed contractors, some of whom do good work. Tomorrow, there is a meeting of Licensed Home Improvement Contractors called by the Dept of Consumer Affairs. I expect tight budgets will be a topic, as we are now required to provide paid sick days, for the first time in our industry. Still, if you are pouring water on your floor, a licensed contractor can be located when you really need to find them again. I would be happy to discuss waterproof tile installation and drainage systems with you (get a cup of strong coffee first). You can find me in the directory under Shower Stalls. Or, you can read a long discussion of my work here: http://www.houzz.com/projects/152834/Barrier-Free-Shower-Stalls. I understand you are looking for other homeowners to chime in. Hopefully they will.
