Homeowners Insurance and window guards

Hello all,   Longtime Brooklyn resident and lurker here, first time poster.  My wife and I are about to experience the joys of homeownership [_shudder_], however, we have been told by our current insurance provider that the iron window guards on the garden floor of the brownstone we are in contract to purchase must be removed, or we will need to find insurance coverage elsewhere.  We’ve explained to them that the iron bars are simply a feature of the neghborhood, i.e., extremely common, and removing seems like a terrible idea from a security perspective. This can’t be the only time something like this has come up, but I’ve been unable to find an answer in the archives here.   So, do I remove the bars and the replace them with more modern versions that can open (from the inside, obviously) to satisfy this particular, and inexpensive, insurance provider?  Or can some of you recommend another provider, perhaps a local company that would be more used to window guards?  Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I’m referring to the ancient iron bars (often painted black) that cover the lower-floored windows of the vast majority of brownstones in Brooklyn.  Not sure whether I should be calling the window “bars” or window “guards”.

window guards and window bars are different things. might seem nit-picky but could lead to some confusion in your disussion with carriers.
