I need to hang a shelf

I need to hang a shelf but it’s on an outer wall that is plaster over concrete, the drill bit stops about 1/2 of an inch into the wall and nails bend there as well.

Painter Pete, I just use my hands – takes out all ambiguity. Regards, Dave the Decorator. Not to self – never hire Handyman Joe (or at least check out online forums to see whattype of advice he’s getting for my jobs, LOL) As to the actual question: i’ll second the tapcon vote. comes with the masonry bit sized properly to the screw, and if you don’t have a hammer drill – it’ll still work for you but the bit will be toast in short order. depending on the fastening method you’re using, you could use the tapcon screws with washers to fasten a wooden header or full backing board, and then build off of that, or you can attach individual shel supports directly with the tapcon screws.

Hammer drill and lead anchor. Problem solved.

I’d suggest using a masonry bit and long lead anchors that go through the plaster well into the concrete. You may need something more powerful than a small cordless drill to do this.

I don’t understand. You’re “Handyman Joe” and you’re on Brownstoner asking how to drive a nail into concrete?

What about one of those blue Tapcon anchor/screws? You can often buy them with packaged with the proper-sized masonry bit which will take care of your concrete problem.
