Painting Metal Deck
I just had a metal deck installed and would like to paint it black. I’m looking to see what primer and paint is the most effective? Is it advisable to have a professional do this? Or just a matter of having the correct primer and paint and doing it myself?

any exposure to the elements means rust has started even if you cannot see it – but the debate is still open as to whether rusty metal primer is needed. I would consider what dibs says or explore some of the rust reformers (which can be used on “unrusty” metal. I suggest a reformer because I treated rusty steel with it and meant to paint the steel and didn’t and left it out all winter and the rust never took off again and the reformer did not peel or flake – I think that was a rustoleum product and I am convinced it is the end all. there are other treatments out there but they can get a little over-the-top (ie, acid wash first to remove rust). Maybe read a little about this on the web as there will be different ideas and you will want to balance them against cost and longevity. In so far as is this something you can do on your own, once you have decided what product and process to use, yes. it is labor, not rocket science. and I am not putting my name forth to do this- Steve

Use an oil (alkyd) base primer, preferably a xinc chromate one. Rust-Oleum makes one. And then an oil base topcoat. Make sure you do this before any rust accumulates. If it’s rusted already, wire brush it to remove it or use a rust coating primer. “POR” is the best one.
