Recco for General Contractor - Beer

I’m a long-time reader, first-time poster, but created a BS account specifically to recommend our contractor – Thalal Beer.  I hope this is the right spot for this sort of thing.  Beer’s been mentioned on this site before (where, incidentally, I first got his contact details), but I think a fresh review is warranted.  Beer has now completed 3 bathrooms, a basement, and sundry smaller jobs for us, and I have nothing but good things to say about him and his work. 

Necessary but not sufficient, his work product is quality and detail-oriented.  Almost as important, however, is how keen he is to be personally engaged in the project – whether by sharing opinions (both aesthetic and structural) or taking enormous pride in the finish.  He is always up for sharing his considerable knowledge and tools, having a laugh with my toddler, and just generally being a pleasant guy (he’s been working pretty well full time in our house for several months now, so there’s been plenty of margin for ticking each other off).  For instance, every evening before knocking off, Beer goes to the trouble of sweeping and mopping up in and around the work area (including stairs leading down from the upstairs bathroom where he was working).  Furthermore, and this is important to me as a relative new-comer to home reno, as the projects evolved, Beer was able to adapt to our requested work modifications without making a fuss. 

He’s delivered on budget and deadlines, and called me every time he wasn’t going to be able to make it in to the job for an afternoon for whatever reason.  Most of the work he did solo, and, as promised, there were no sub-ks.  He is licensed and insured. 

Bottom line: He’s fair-minded and very good at what he does, having several decades of experience in a field where the training is almost exclusively on the job.  His communication skills could be better, but if you are clear and respectful, expect a very positive experience (not to mention a vastly improved living space).

I’ve met with Thalal and am impressed, however, he does not appear to have a current, valid NYC Home Improvement Contractor’s License. Was this the case for your jobs? Thanks.

A year or so after Aki’s post, we can atest that Thalal Beer (Beer Construction Corp, 646-358-6118) is still doing quality work at reasonable rates. We had Beer and his crew do significant renovations to our home @ 354 5th St and are very happy with both the outcome and the process. The reno included all three floors, demo’ing existing and building a new bath and kitchen, referbusing orginal wood staircases and moldings, creating a roof-top deck & more.
