FWIW I’ve been using Minwax stains for about 45 years and really like them. I recently tried a gel stain and found it much messier to work with. A caveat?I don’t have anything close to Rick’s experience and I’m old, so maybe I just don’t like to change products I’m accustomed to (for example, I still use Minwax Antique Oil Finish, which is still made, but hard to find, probably because the solvent in it kills off lots of brain cells. Regarding the Minwax all-in-one pollyshades; these varnish stains definitely have a use, albeit a limited one IMO. I recently had to finish some partly synthetic “wood” appliqués to match an antique mahogany cornice that I was converting into a range hood. They didn’t take either penetrating or gel stain very well, but the varnish stain worked fine, after I took off the high gloss with fine steel wool and restored a low-luster gloss with wax. Years ago I used non-poly Sapolin varnish stain, which AFAIK is no longer made, for a similar project.

minwax gunstock may be the one. minwax is a real crappy product though. if you go to Abbot Paint on Eagle St in Greenpoint, Charlie the manager can help you find a Mohawk Product that will fit the bill. Steve

Here’s a link to the minwax color samples http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/stains-color-guide/ Sedona Red looks to be a good match. Use the penetrating stain and let it dry and use a clear polly finish. ( i am not a fan of their stain & polly mix called pollyshades ) Minwax is an okay product but I like the quality gel stains better. In my experience, Gel Stains provide a richer color and they apply better than penetrating stains. I often use Abbott Paint in Brooklyn for my paint supplies. General Finishes oil based gel stains is a great product. https://generalfinishes.com/retail-products/oil-base-wood-stains-sealers/oilbase-gel-stains#.VfQNvii6a10 Make some samples on scrap oak and you should be good to go. Good luck with your project.
