Furniture consignment with home pick-up?
Does anyone know of a furniture consignment service that takes large pieces and picks them up from your home? I have three very nice items of wood furniture (rocking chair, shelving unit, desk–all from Pompanoosuc Mills) that I no longer need. I’m looking for an efficient way to get them off my hands. I would rather not have to deal with scheduling multiple showings and the other details that would be necessary if I posted the items individually here or on Craigslist, etc. (But watch this space–listings may be forthcoming if the consignment route doesn’t work out!) Thanks.

Any chance you would be willing to send me the details on the rocking chair? My email is: jhb8981 at gmail dot com

I have looked at stuff and not bought – because the description and the phone call said something was solid oak, when it was presswood (not even plywood.) So I have learned to not waste my time with sellers who don’t list measurements and detailed descriptions. If you do a good listing, you will get good and ready buyers. If you browse craigslist for similar items, you will see what is an informative listing, and what is not, and so learn how to market your pieces best.

In my experience selling stuff on craigslist, if you take really clear pictures, and write a very detailed description, including really detailed measurements (like including height and width of desk’s kneehole space, and the height of each shelf space on the bookshelves, as pictured, and note which, if any, shelves are adjustable, and listing the height, width and depth of rocker, and also the height, width and depth of the seat portion) ,description of item’s condition and any wear, and a link to the item on pompy’s site, if it is still made by them…well, then buyers have all the information they need and, not wanting to waste their own time, they make the decision before they arrive. I never had someone come look and not buy the furniture – they came ready to purchase, with cash, and with truck or large car to carry it away immediately. They came ready to buy as long as the piece was as I had described to them. It especially works for well known items people have seen in stores – like Ikea – and I would think for buyers of pompy’s stuff, they’d know it as well. Many people like their furniture, but can’t, or don’t want to, pay the new-from-the-store-price, and keep an eye out for such quality furniture on craigslist. Put Pompanoosuc in the title, as well as “solid x” (x being the species of wood, if it is solid) so people can find them in a search. Perhaps also make it clear in your description where their store is – so they can get an idea of the quality from them, if they don’t already know it. You can talk to them on the phone first to arrange a viewing, and you can get an idea if someone is flaky and not set up a time to show to them. Easier than consignment would be, in my experience. Way, way easier than I expected. A pleasant way to pass on stuff you like but no longer need. If you don’t take good pics, do what I did, borrow a friend and their camera, and have them email you the photos for the listing. Write each as a separate listing, making note at the bottom to look for the listings for the two other pieces. Good luck.
