Recommendation for painting and repairing ceiling cracks

We bought our house two years ago and, although the previous owners had repainted the parlor floor walls and ceiling, we could see evidence cracks in the plaster that had been spackled over.  Some of the cracks are getting worse and we’re having some paint chipping as well.  I’d like to repaint and fix the cracks in a way that would (hopefully) keep the cracks from coming back and stave off having to repaint for a number of years.  Our house is 140 years old and has settled a bit (i.e. uneven floors pitching to the center of the house), and, although we’d like to do some structural upgrades, we most likely will not do that for 2 – 3 years.  (It’s struturally sound.)  We are not planning on doing a gut renovation.  My question is, is it possible to fix the cracks and repaint if the house is going to continue to settle?  Is it worth it?  Also, does anyone know how much money I’m looking at spending approximately?  The two rooms combined are 19 feet wide and 40 feet deep.  Thanks very much.

a pro can use mesh to bridge the cracks and blend it with the surrounding surface. it will save you $$ vs. reskimming the whole floor.  we just had it done in a client’s house and looks and it looks great.  happy to reccommend the guys we use– excellent craftsmen and very reasonable.  shoot me an email if you’re interested: ari@housebywe.com

Ask for estimates on a skim or skin coat – I ahd it done 12 years ago & haven’t had a crack since.
