What to do with this ugly stoop?
http://cdn.brownstoner.com/51703ac5ebbc1-.png
The previous owners of our house painted the stoop, and now the paint is peeling, revealing several layers of colors as well as lots of the original reddish masonry beneath. The stoop seems to be in good condition–no chunks are coming loose or anything like that–but it looks terrible because of the peeling paint. Since this is a cosmetic problem rather than a structural one, we don’t want to spend a ton, so we’d like to avoid a major resurfacing project. Would it work to just strip the paint and leave the stoop in its ‘natural’ state, or would that process leave the material underneath too damaged to look okay? Or do we need to repaint? (Not two-tone blue again, obviously!) If so, can anyone recommend a company/person that does good work? And give a ballpark idea of what we might pay for this? We understand that repainting may not be a ‘permanent’ solution, but we just want to stop being the eyesore of our block. Thanks!

I would recommend stripping the paint, removing the cement patches and repairs the stones with a specialty brownstone repair product and re-coating the railing and walls with two coats of elastomeric coating. It would cost approximately $4,500\. give me a call Robert 917.502.5704

You may see stoop was patched by gray cement instead of brownstone cement if yo strip off paint. or it will be nice brownstone stoop all you have to do little bit of repair. With the small budget you may scrape and repaint or strip off paint and repair with brownstone cement.2nd option will be the best for another 10 years at least, could be more but repainting may be bother you again and again.

a neighbor had a stoop resurfaced and it cost about $10K (including sidewalk wall and 1st floor front wall of house.) Stripping will likely reveal lots of masonry patches, which are almost certainly not color matched. The downside of painting is it accelerates the degradation of the stone, trapping moisture in it. If you just want a cosmetic and temporary fix, you can do a passable scrape and repaint. Just make sure they put a no-skid additive on the steps, so people don’t kill themselves.
